AYO Fall Concert

Join us at the Wylie Performing Arts Center Monday, November 15th, at 7:00pm for the AYO Fall Concert. The Abilene Youth Orchestra will perform the first Fall Concert of the season and debut our newest program, Mission: Strings!  Tickets are $5 (kids 5 and under free) and can be purchased at the door or online at www.abileneyouthorchestra.org.

Our AYO and Mission: Strings students have been working hard this Fall semester to prepare their programs for this event. After an intense program, they are ready to share what they’ve learned. The students rehearsed Sunday afternoons and were tutored by Music Directors and local music educators.

We recently launched Mission: Strings, a string preparatory program for students in grades 3-5 who are beginning the journey of learning how to play a stringed instrument. Each week these students are assigned a new “mission” to learn new techniques and expand their musical knowledge.  Mission: Strings will complete their final “mission” of the semester where they will demonstrate their skills and receive their “License to Bow”!  It will be a wonderful chance for these beginners to observe and be inspired by the AYO concert that follows.

The Abilene Youth Orchestra will be performing some familiar and unfamiliar pieces on their portion of the program. The first piece they will perform is the Brahms Hungarian Dance No. 5. It is a work you might recognize from movies or tv commercials. Its dance-like rhythms are a great kickoff to the concert!

A unique feature of this concert will be the AYO performing a new work by Abilene Composer, Fred Grigg titled: Hakkapeliita. This piece has never been performed which will make this a World Premiere performance! The students will have the opportunity to work directly with the composer. A truly rare experience since most composers lived long ago. This in-depth tutelage will allow them to learn the process and inspiration for his music; gaining a greater understanding into the craft of composing.

Come out and support this burgeoning new class of talented students at their Fall concert this Monday. Now that it is a bit safer to gather, please join us at Wylie Performing Arts Center on November 15th at 7:00PM.
